Weakerthans Announce New Concert DVD

Posted By Sue, February 10th, 2010 - No Comments »

Indie rock heroes The Weakerthans new DVD-CD “Live at the Burton Cummings Theater,” set for release on March 23, offers a jubilant testament to the Winnipeg band’s considerable creative powers as both literary minded songwriters and charismatic live performers. Founded in 1997 the band has deep roots in the thriving North American indie scene. The band is revered for both their powerfully melodic folk punk sound and the vivid and inspired imagery of the lyrics – their beloved song “Plea from a Cat Named Virtute” is told from the point of view of a depressive’s wise and knowing cat. The live DVD was recorded in April of 2009 as the band toured in support of their triumphant album Reunion Tour with an expanded line-up featuring trumpet, violin and female vocals, playing songs from all four acclaimed releases in front of an adoring and enthusiastic hometown crowd.

Fresh off the Rolling Tundra Review, an exhaustive Canadian tour with the Constantines that spanned almost two months, The Weakerthans promise to be in fine form.

It’s Official – The Weakerthans are Canada’s Winningest Band

Posted By Gina, October 20th, 2008 - 1 Comment »

The Weakerthans John K Samson by freyapare

This year’s big winners at the Western Canadian Music Awards were The Weakerthans, who swept the awards with Outstanding Independent Album and Songwriters of the Year for Reunion Tour, and Video of the Year for “Civil Twilight.” Add that to the 2008 ECHO Songwriting Prize and XM Satellite Radio’s Verge Music Awards prize for Artist of the Year and it would seem that The Weakerthans are just about to edge out Celine as most popular Canadians. And don’t they deserve it!

Weakerthan’s frontman suggests Winnipeg’s new slogan

The Winnipeg Free Press

By Bartley Kives

Here’s something that could only happen in Winnipeg: A right-leaning mayor who used to promote rock concerts and a left-leaning rock singer with political inclinations are on the same page.

After three days of perusing Free Press stories filled with slogan suggestions for new welcome signs slated for city limits, Mayor Sam Katz says he’s most impressed with a suggestion from John K. Samson, frontman for The Weakerthans and author of a song named after the soon-to-be-retired slogan, One Great City.

“I’ve got to tell you the truth, I’ve read some really bad ones. But I actually heard a good one: ‘Winnipeg, the centre of it all.’ That has some good meat to it,” Katz said.

By the end of the summer, the city will replace 10 welcome signs bearing the “One Great City” tagline inspired by the 1972 creation of Unicity.
